Image
In this project, we aimed to present our department through a simple and precise overview that anyone can understand its nature. It clarifies the importance of this field and the opportunities it provides for education. We put information briefly about the department on a roll-up, notes, and a video on the screen with more expanded information. A brief review of the video content:  TEFL project video ·        What is TEFL? It is the field of teaching English to non-native speakers in countries where English is not the primary language. ·        What are the main objectives of TEFL? 1.       Developing communication skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. 2.       Enhancing academic and career opportunities for students in global contexts. 3.       Fostering cross-cultural understanding and intercultural competen...

The Role of Motivation in SLA: An Academic Essay

The Role of Motivation in SLA Aishah Hasan AlAlShaykh (446813518)   Department of Teaching English as a Foreign Language King Khalid University (Eng-6503) Second Language Acquisition   Instructor: AbdulAziz Fageeh April 2025     The Role of Motivation in SLA    Every learning process must contain basic components to ensure that it goes smoothly. Motivation is one of them; it is considered a key factor in influencing the learning process. In this essay, light will be shed on motivation's role in second language acquisition, such as definition, types, theories, and challenges with solutions that face learners in SLA.    Motivation in the SLA field has huge explorations and studies. There are many definitions of motivation. The first one is as Zareian and Jodaei (2015) mentioned; it is the effort, desire, and positive attitude toward learning a language (Zarein and Jodaei, 2015). The second one, according to Ai et ...

Fifth's Reflection

Fifth’s lecture reflection      In the first part of this lecture, we discussed with Doctor Abdulaziz about our reflections. He pointed out the gaps and what we can do to improve our writing. For me, I have to change the structure itself and rearrange it, adding some details and implications. So that we can write a research paper easily. The second part we discussed was about aspects of SLA, which are theories and hypotheses, key concepts, factors affecting SLA, elements, principles, and components of SLA. I am interested in motivation, which is under the component’s category, and consider it an essential tool for SLA. In this reflection, I will explore motivation’s impact on SLA through many points of view and add my opinion on its implications in real life.      Gardner (1968) identified that motivation is an essential factor that determines the success of SLA, and it appears from the situations regarding the language and its community (Gardner, 196...

Fourth Reflection

The fourth week’s reflection      In the fourth week’s lecture, we discussed many topics in second language acquisition in detail. For example, error analysis, the process of second language learning, and language development. In this reflection, the focus will be on output and production, and interlanguage in SLA.      Firstly, every journey of learning any language starts with input. Without using this input, this knowledge becomes useless. Gass and Selinker (2008) stated that in order to benefit from the input, the interaction approach must be used. After interacting with others, you will get feedback for your output to reinforce your performance and correct this output to produce it in the right way. Also, the lack of production leads to a lack of proficiency. They mentioned that Swain had stated in her paper (1985) that the learners must push themselves to be comprehensible. ‘pushed output’ is used to produce sentences that are new to them (Gass & ...

Third Reflection: Second Language Acquisition among Children

Third Reflection: Second Language Acquisition among Children In recent years, parents and carers have noticed that children have learned another language after or alongside their first language. They started focusing on improving their learning skills and becoming fluent in a second language. This reflection will shed light on the factors that play a major role in children's performance, such as age, interactionist and feedback, environment, and NL on learning SL. Firstly, age plays a significant role in language acquisition. Munoz (2014) states that children who start learning a second language at an early age, have more ability to acquire the pronunciation fluently like native speakers. Especially in an environment where exposure to the language is intensive (Munoz, 2014). Moreover, Chondrogianni (2018) mentions that critical period hypothesis is the human brain has a period to receive language input particularly. Age also plays a major role in syntax acquisition. Children be...

Second Reflection

Second Reflection: Week 2  In the second lecture, we discussed about many things in first language and second language acquisition. For example: theories of first language acquisition and the themes and topics of second language acquisition. The details of the discussion will be shown down here. At first, we discussed about language development in isolated environments. Whoever has been put in isolation environment, can not communicate normally with people. And they must generate somehow a way or a language to communicate with others, if they went outside of this isolated place. This reminds me of people who live in forests like in Africa. When youtubers go there and discover such people live there and filming them, they found out that they can not speak any known language, and they generate their own language. Then, the introduction to first language acquisition. Especially the theories. There is many scholars that published their own theories in this field. Such as behaviorist th...

Introductory Reflection

Introductory Reflection First impressions are the most important thing when meeting new people. By meeting new people, you learn new things and habits, and you tell them your learning habits. To get along with them and go deep in this knowledge, requires the basic strategies of thinking. Then do tasks and assessments about this knowledge. This reflection of the first lecture will talk about these in detail. The first point is to get a good impression, you must socialize and introduce yourself perfectly. By introducing yourself to others, they know about you better and you know them more as well. Knowing their favourite things, interests, dislikes, and habits. After this important step is done, you start the next stage which is knowing new things in new fields that you may not have known before. Expanding your knowledge about many things in life will benefit you significantly. Start exchanging your knowledge about your learning philosophy and habits. For example, recommending to each ...
